It was supposed to be launched commercially last October, but for some reason was held back at the last minute. That wait is finally over.

The Lenovo ThinkPad Tablet 2 is now available for retail. For $649, you would get this Windows 8 tablet with a 64GB internal storage and WiFi-only connection; add $30 more and you get a pen input and digitizer screen for those who love jotting and doodling on their tablets. Finally, the $729 version comes with Windows 8 Pro, ideal for the corporate bunch.

Base specs include an 1.8GHz Intel Atom Z2760 processor, 10.1-inch HD-quality multitouch screen, and 2GB of RAM. All versions also have free Office upgrade (Office purchase not included) and free use of Skype Premium for 12 months (a $100 value) if the device is bought on or before January 31, 2013.

Polaroid to Supposedly Launch Android Based Mirrorless Camera

A leak from Russian social networking site VK claims that Polaroid will be introducing a new camera soon. The camera would not be the usual device we expect from them, but a shooter that comes with a mirrorless interchangeable lens system and will run on Android.

Polaroid has long discontinued its traditional instant-film cameras as it ran into different bankruptcy situations. The company signed an agreement with Summit Global Group in 2009 and Sakar International last January to produce digital still cameras slapped with the Polaroid brand. It is possible that the upcoming camera would be the fruit of such partnerships, but we cannot confirm the rumor just yet.

The leaked information claims that the Android 4.0-powered camera will feature a 3.5-inch touchscreen, an 18.1-megapixel sensor, pop-up flash, WiFi connectivity, and HDMI/ headphone out. It is designed with rounded edges similar to the Nikon 1 J2 mirrorless camera.

Google X Phone flagshipp tipped with Motorola in tow

As Google continues it work with now-owned Motorola to bring about a more vanilla (read: Google-only Android) universe, it’s become apparent this afternoon that they may be going full-tilt with a smartphone code-named “X Phone”. This tip comes from the Wall Street Journal where they’ve got an internal leakster saying the marquee handset will be up and ready sooner than later. This development effort has been said to be underway already here in 2012 and will likely be up for action before the end of 2013.


This machine will be “more potent competition” for hero devices such as the iPhone, or so the sources familiar with the matter are saying Google and Motorola hope. Their efforts are “running into some obstacles”, say these same sources, obstacles that relate to manufacturing and supply-chain management. This is of course well within the realm of real possibilities if indeed the X Phone does exist since Google has had only a select few bits of hardware manufactured for themselves in the recent past – growing pains, that is.
This release is said to be being run by former Google product manager Lior Ron who has apparently been asked to push camera and photo software first, with “color saturation and the ability to take panoramic shots” placed as important points. It’s been tipped by these sources that Motorola will be working with technology acquired with Motorola’s recent buy of the Viewdle group earlier this year.
For those of you following along with this story that are finding it slightly difficult to believe: you’re not alone. If you do end up reading the full Wall Street Journal story past their paywall or in the full print magazine, you’ll find yourself perusing a list of elements that are mostly picked from previous events and rumors that do not connect directly to the sources they have here near the end of 2012. In other words: take this all with a big grain of salt.
Google may eventually use Motorola to create a new Nexus device in the future – it wouldn’t be out of the question for them to do so in 2013, not by a long shot. Google hasn’t yet worked with Motorola to create a Nexus smartphone and since Samsung, HTC, and LG have now all had a shot, it only makes sense that Motorola would be next. Expect a Motorola Nexus device in 2013, it only makes common sense.

NECs Medias W unveiled a folding smartphone with two 4 3 inch displays

Japanese carrier NTT DoCoMo just outed its spring lineup of handsets, and the Medias W N-05E caught or eye, just like it did as a hollow mockup at last years Mobile World Congress. The NEC-made handset has gone from a mere plastic shell to an LTE-wielding phone with a pair of 4.3-inch LCD displays (each 540 x 960 in resolution), a 1.5 GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, an 8-megapixel shooter, 16GB of built-in storage and a microSDHC slot. When open, the device serves up roughly 5.6 inches in diagonal screen real estate, and measures up at 64mm in width when shut. Thanks to the nature of the dual-screened beast, apps can use each screen independently or together to provide more space. Despite the Jelly Bean-toting rigs penchant for going over the top, it leaves out NFC and Japan-centric digital TV tuner functionality. The smartphone is slated for an April release with an unspecified price tag, but theres no word on availability in other territories.

Runbo X5 and X3 rugged Android phones moonlight as walkie talkies cost just 320

Weve seen a handful of rugged Androids in our time, but none are as affordable and as weird as these ones at CES. The backstory here is that a couple of Chinese guys in camouflage gear approached us at our CES stage, and after an awkward conversation, it turned out that they just wanted to show us the three rugged phones they brought all the way from Shenzhen. Starting from the right we have the Runbo (like Rambo?) X1 IP67-certified featurephone cum walkie-talkie, which packs a 2-inch 176 × 144 display, a 0.3-megapixel front-facing camera, a laser pointer, quad-band GSM plus 800MHz CDMA cellular radios, 400 to 470MHz range for the software-configurable walkie-talkie, a surprisingly loud speaker and a 2,200mAh battery. This will be available for ¥980 or about $160 on Taobao online store (the Chinese equivalent of eBay) in the next couple of days, and weve been told that there will also be a variant with GPS added.

But the real stars of the show are the two brick-sized vanilla Android 4.0.4 devices. The phone pictured in the middle is the Runbo X5, a device featuring a 1GHz dual-core Cortex-A9 MTK6577 chipset, 1GB RAM, 4GB storage, microSD expansion, a 4.3-inch 800 x 480 IPS display, an app-triggered laser pointer, an eight-megapixel main camera, a 0.3-megapixel front camera, a super loud speaker (again) and a massive removable 3,800mAh battery. And yes, this also comes with a 400 to 470MHz walkie-talkie radio (up to 10km range; with detachable antenna), along with the additional 850/1900/2100 WCDMA radio, two SIM slots (WCDMA plus GSM), WiFi, Bluetooth 3.0 and GPS. These specs are the same for the Runbo X3 on the left, except for the smaller 3.5-inch 800 x 480 IPS panel to make space for the QWERTY keyboard below it. The best part here are the prices: both of these IP67-certified devices are available on Taobao or the official website for just ¥1,999 or about $320, which is a bargain for both the ruggedness and the fact that these double as standard walkie-talkies. Samsung Galaxy S4 to sport new camera features

With the release of the Samsung Galaxy S4 just a few months away the rumour mill has been heating up with leaks including case images and now new software features

The Samsung Galaxy S4 could feature a new camera mode called Samsung Orb which would allow users to stitch together a completely 360-degree image, similar to Googles own Photo Sphere feature found on Android Jelly Bean.

The leak comes from Android Geeks who claim to have been contacted by a software engineer working on the Galaxy SIV. The engineer claims that Samsung Orb will be better than Photo Sphere due to the Galaxy S4s rumoured 13MP camera.

Facebook integration has also been suggested with users able to upload their Samsung Orb pictures onto the social network allowing others to click on the image and then look around inside the 360-degree photo.

The Galaxy S4 is yet to be confirmed however several companies have already started releasing videos of Galaxy S4 cases which have revealed that the smartphone will be around the same size as the Galaxy S3 but will sport a completely new design.

Other reports have claimed that the S4 will be Samsungs most powerful smartphone yet featuring a huge 1.8GHz eight-core chip called the Exynos 5 Octa chip.

While this directly contradicts SamMobile which believes Samsungs new superphone will come with a 2.0GHz quad-core processor, either would still make it the most powerful smartphone available trumping HTCs newly announced HTC One and wiping the floor of Apples iPhone 5.

With Samsung set to unveil budget and mid-range smartphones such as the Galaxy Star at MWC 2013, users will have to wait until after the conference to find out what the Galaxy S4 will look like with rumours pointing to a mid-March release date.

Users also have the ability to manually change to over or underexpose a picture, which can affect the drama and impact of a photo.

The absence of dials and physical buttons means everything you need to change is done on the touchscreen. In theory, it’s a nice idea, and the large 4.7-inch display gives users plenty of space to change and refine. But the UI is implemented in a way that makes precision a bit difficult and cumbersome. I found myself accidentally scrolling past what ISO, or shutter speed, or f-stop I wanted to choose. It’s frustrating. It can slow you down.

This might not always be a problem, but it gives you an idea of how the experience translates to a touch-only environment. That’s fine. We can get used to something like this. Most of the gadgets we own are touch anyway.

How does it actually perform as a camera, though? Samsung essentially stuffed $200 worth of camera components on top of a $300 smartphone. In the grand scheme of things, the overall image performance is disappointing. When you consider that other cameras on the market go for equal or lesser the value, cameras that produce much, much nicer image quality, it’s hard to justify going for Samsung’s hybrid device over something like Canon’s S110, or Panasonic’s Lumix LX7 (both are $450).

The images captured by the Galaxy Camera, especially in Auto Mode, produced results that looked dull, washed out, lacking vibrancy. I was able to tweak white balance and exposure to more accurately capture my surroundings, but most people won’t have the wherewithal to do the same, especially for those merely looking for a mindless point-and-shoot experience.

ISO only goes up to 3200, which is ok, but it becomes a problem in poorly-lit scenes. Particularly inside, noise is present when ISO is cranked all the way up, so I guess that’s our answer as to why Samsung only limited it to 3200.

When you consider just how great smartphone cameras have become, you’d expect more from the Galaxy Camera, better. It just isn’t there, unfortunately, and the pictures you upload to Facebook with your iPhone 5 won’t look all that different. Nobody will be able to tell the difference on Instagram.
