Hands On Nvidia’s Project Shield Is Impressive But Not Perfect

Project Shield is a console-style gaming controller with the buttons, triggers, dual joysticks and single directional pad you’re familiar with if you’ve ever touched an Xbox or PlayStation controller. It’s comfortable for gameplay and everything responds well for a prototype, though the joysticks and triggers feel like they could use a bit more tuning before the device heads to retail.

But Project Shield is more than a controller. It has a 5-inch 720p touchscreen built into a clam shell cover. The display is detailed, bright and really, really attractive — it’s competitive with any phone or tablet out there.

Project Shield runs what is essentially stock Android Jelly Bean, which is the best flavor of Android out there. As such, the device can run any Android game or app found in Google Play. Thanks to an HDMI port, anything that shows up on Project Shield can show up on our HDTV. It can’t, however, make a phone call, but that’s no biggie. This is, after all, a device designed with gamers in mind.

The most tremendous feature of Project Shield is its ability to stream PC games (including those found on the popular gaming service Steam) from a PC in your home, to the device’s 5-inch display. I played Need For Speed Most Wanted, streamed from a PC, and it went smoothly, with no noticeable lag or degradation in visual quality while playing. But the PC streaming only works if your PC is on the same Wi-Fi network as Project Shield (i.e. no PC streaming outside of the home) and if the streaming PC has Nvidia’s GeForce GTX graphic processor installed.

The technology used to pull of this PC streaming — the interaction between the GeForce GTX and the Nvidia Tegra 4 processor inside of Project Shield — should show up in more of Nvidia’s graphics cards in the future. If that pans out, the best case scenario here is that this PC streaming capability will grow over time. The worst case scenario is that Project Shield will be used simply as an Android gaming console and nothing else — which, if priced right, wouldn’t be a horrible.

At the moment, Nvidia isn’t saying what Project Shield will cost. This decision will be key. Google’s Nexus 7, Amazon’s Kindle Fire and Apple’s iPads have opened up an entirely new world of gaming in large part because they’re accessibly priced. Project Shield, which Nvidia says will be renamed before it officially goes on sale, offers the promise of the best features of a tablet married with console-quality gaming. It’s an attractive concept, but getting a lot of consumers to pick up a Shield instead of a tablet, or a Nintendo 3DS, will be tough if the price tag is too high.

Samsung I9300 Galaxy S III Manual Guide

Galaxy S III slightly larger than the Galaxy S II. The third generation of the family S Smartphone has dimensions of 136.6 x 70.6 x 8.6 mm and weighs 133 grams. Panasonics automotive division, also known as the Automotive Systems Company, has just announced a collaboration with RealVNC to replicate your smartphone screen for control on your cars dashboard. The two firms have already worked together on the project for the past year, but have recently stepped it up to include integration of additional technologies like MirrorLink into Panasonics Display-Audio infotainment system. According to RealVNCs press release, the system has "already been adopted by a major automotive manufacturer" and is currently available as a dealer option, though were not sure which automaker that is. Japan-based company Miso Soup Design is set to launch an ingenious new product called “Anti-Loneliness Ramen Bowl” (I didn’t make that name up). Unlike ordinary noodle bowls, this one comes with a built-in iPhone dock so you can Skype your friend, or your mom, while slurping that semi-salty broth. You can also munch your pasta while browsing through your social networks, watch videos, and enjoy music.

Minnie Jan, one of the bowl’s designers, told New York Daily News that the idea came after spotting a Taiwanese man enjoying his ramen noodles on one hand while holding his phone with the other.

“We thought it would be a god idea to help him restore his manners,” Jan said.

The company announced on its Facebook page that they are now accepting a “limited number” of pre-orders through their Facebook page. The bowls–which will come in white, black and red–should be available around April and May. They did not reveal how much the Anti-Loneliness Ramen Bowl would cost.

The iPhone-compliant ramen bowl reminds us of the Hapifork, which was introduced at CES earlier this month. The electronic fork, created by a Hong Kong-based company called Hapilads, monitors your eating habits and tells you when to stop gobbling on that pasta.

Huawei Ascend G710 reportedly spied touting a 5 inch 720p screen

Just because Huawei has already launched a small torrent of smartphones two months into 2013 doesnt mean the company is taking a vacation anytime soon. Evleaks has spotted whats purported to be the Ascend G710, a not-quite-high-end smartphone that would sit just below the Ascend D2. While it would preserve the 5-inch screen and 1.5GHz quad-core processor, it would dip to a 720p resolution. Theres hints that it may be more a step sideways, however, through some less performance-minded changes: the G710 would have a premium-looking metal (or metal-effect) back, free up screen real estate with capacitive navigation buttons and talk to both CDMA and GSM networks. When the camera, storage and the all-important launch plans are still missing, though, theres a long way to go before we know where this latest Ascend might sit in Huaweis catalog.

Details of Apples Negotiations Including Steve Jobs Email

Seventeen more states have joined the antitrust lawsuitagainst Apple and several book publishing houses over the pricing of ebooks. Perhaps more interesting are certain details released in the latest filing that were previously redacted, including one from Steve Jobs. Portions of this email have been seen before, but this is the first chance the public has had to see a major negotiation written by the former CEO.

As reported by PaidContent, Steve Jobs became directly involved in the pricing negotiations after Apple executive "Eddy Cue could not secure one of the Conspiring Publisher’s commitment directly from an executive." Jobs "wrote to an executive at the parent company, in part":
As I see it, [Conspiring Publisher] has the following choices:

1. Throw in with Apple and see if we can all make a go of this to create a real mainstream ebooks market at $12.99 and $14.99.

2. Keep going with Amazon at $9.99. You will make a bit more money in the short term, but in the medium term Amazon will tell you they will be paying you 70% of $9.99. They have shareholders too.

3. Hold back your books from Amazon. Without a way for customers to buy your ebooks, they will steal them. This will be the start of piracy and once started, there will be no stopping it. Trust me, I’ve seen this happen with my own eyes.

Maybe I’m missing something, but I don’t see any other alternatives. Do you?
The complaint goes on to claim that the publishers and Apple "worked together to force" Random House -- the one publishing company to turn down the agency pricing model favored by Apple -- to adopt it as well. The claim goes so far as to claim that publishing companies tried to convince Barnes & Noble to not feature Random House books in any of its advertising, something that B&N apparently did.

Regarding the case, Apple has publicly defended itself and also said it wants to defend itself in a jury trial, saying that allegations against the company were "simply not true."
